The Congregation “Daughters of the Sacred Heart” was founded on 21st November 1903 by a Maltese lady, Maria Teresa Nuzzo. She was humble, simple but of strong character. Her main aim was to give sound human, intellectual and Christian formation to children and preparing the young girls to take their stand in life. The distinctive charism “Charity in simplicity and humility” as the fruit of her love for the Sacred Heart of Jesus was passed on to her sisters. The Nuzzo Institute at Hamrun is the ‘Mother House’ of the Congregation.

As the years rolled by the tiny seed grew and continued to bear fruit within Malta Island.

Today there are 9 houses in Malta carrying out the work of education both academic & moral, caring for orphans, youth formation and other social work.

The Congregation also took root outside the country. In 1949, carrying the same charism of love to India the sisters planted the seed of faith among the people of other belief. Today there are 22 communities spred in different dioceses touching the lives of people through formal and informal education, catechism, orphanage, medical care and social work.

The missionary zeal and social commitment was further extended to African Country. In 1968 a group of sisters carried on their charism in Tripoli, Libya by taking care of the Muslim orphan children and give Christian values to foreign catholic children.

In 1980 the Congregtion made progress in venturing into Kenya. Here sisters educate and care for the street children and orphans of AIDS victim. To carry out this charism of love and charity, the young girls who are called for this particular mission, are trained in different formation houses of the Congregation.

As the number of vocation increased the East Africa Region was able to open a new community in Tanzania in 2004 to render their service in primary school and technical center according to our charism of love and charity.

In recent years the Congregation has succeeded in fulfilling her dreams of opening houses in other continents. In the year 2003 the Congregation moved to South Korea taking the risk and facing the challenges of learning new language in order to share our charism of charity in simplicity and humility among new born christian families.

In 2004 we also moved to Dallas, America where sisters offer education and moral values to the children of Hispanic settlers.

We wish and pray that our missionary spirit will boost us to spread the love of the Sacred Heart throughout the world.
